【講座報名】Input in Second Language Learning and Teaching

【講座介紹】
This will be mainly a theoretical talk, discussing the nature of input, its role in second language learning, and its use in language teaching (in very general terms). A key concept is implicit (unconscious) learning, contrasting with explicit (conscious) learning, so the talk will also consider what it actually is, and isn’t. The field of Second Language Acquisition is moving toward a consensus that second languages, like first languages, are acquired primarily through implicit learning, based on extensive input, making input the most important feature of second language teaching. There are two general options for the use of input in teaching: (a) try to assist the natural implicit processes by directing learners’ attention to selected features of the input, probably using explicit instruction; (b) trust the natural implicit processes, trying simply to create optimal conditions for them. The conclusion here will be that (b) appears preferable.
