The University of Wisconsin-Madison Law School’s visit for Expanding Exchange and Collaboration

On May 18, 2023, Dean Daniel Tokaji of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Law School led a delegation to visit our law school. The team included Professor John Ohnesorge, Director of the East Asian Legal Studies Center, Rebecca Scheller, Associate Dean for Admissions and Financial Aid, and Jason Smith, Assistant Dean for Graduate Programs. They were received by Dean Yueh-Hung Hou, Vice Dean and Department Chair Ta-Wei Kuo, Vice Dean Hsiao-Wei Kuan, Associate Professor Ming-Hui Huang, and Assistant Professor Bo-Shone Fu.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison, founded in 1848, is a prestigious institution with approximately 43,000 students and 6,000 international students. It has produced 20 Nobel Prize winners and 41 Pulitzer Prize winners, establishing itself as a top-tier research university with a distinguished academic reputation. Since the establishment of the East Asian Legal Studies Center in 1990, the University of Wisconsin Law School has placed a strong emphasis on exchanges with Asian countries. Our law school has had an academic exchange agreement and a dual-degree cooperation agreement with their Law School since 2007. Many outstanding students from our law school have pursued degrees at the University of Wisconsin.

This visit marked the first stop of their Asian tour. In addition to strengthening mutual friendship, both sides engaged in discussions on research areas, teaching methods, and other topics of shared interest. To further enhance the interactive relationship and explore additional collaboration possibilities, both parties discussed the potential for online workshops to expand student and teacher exchanges, fostering bilateral academic synergy. Additionally, Director John Ohnesorge is expected to revisit our law school in the coming fall to conduct academic activities contributing to the ongoing success of international exchanges.

After an initial exchange of ideas, the delegation visited the library and the university archives. Following a brief campus tour, our law school hosted a banquet to extend hospitality to the visiting delegation. Coincidentally, the visit ran into a Karaoke contest organized by the Student Association of the Department of Law. Dean Yueh-Hung Hou invited the University of Wisconsin delegation to join in the event after the meal, leading to active interactions with students.

As a distinguished scholar in election law, Dean Tokaji welcomed students aspiring to study abroad, emphasizing the University of Wisconsin Law School's appreciation for Taiwan due to shared values such as human rights, freedom, democracy, and the rule of law. Finally, Dean Tokaji invited his team and our faculty members to join him on stage for a spirited performance, showing the warm and welcoming atmosphere in the University of Wisconsin’s way. Following today's exchange, the friendship between the two institutions has deepened, and the prospect of further cooperation in various research areas is highly anticipated.
